Cultural Resources
and Events: Interior Museum
Welcome to the U.S. Department of the Interior Museum
The Department of the Interior Museum is located on
the first floor of the Main Interior Building at 1849 C Street NW,
Washington, DC. The Museum is accessible from both the C Street
and E Street entrances; the E Street entrance is wheelchair accessible.
The U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Museum educates the public
and DOI employees about the current missions and programs of the
Department of the Interior, the history of the Department, and the
art and architecture of its headquarters building in Washington,
DC.
The DOI Museum acquires objects appropriate for promoting understanding
of the Department's activities. We hold these objects in trust and
provide access to them for use in supporting the missions of the
Department. We document, preserve, and manage our collections in
ways that enhance their long-term availability for these purposes.
Our DOI Museum activities are targeted to visitors to the nation's
capital. DOI employees, schools, and other groups we reach through
partnerships with other institutions and various media. The Interior
Museum is open the third Saturday of each month from 1:00 to 4:00
p.m. with special family programs planned. To make a reservation
for the program, please call (202) 208-4659.
The Indian Craft Shop, also located in the Department
of the Interior Headquarters Building at 1849 C Street, NW, is also
open the third Saturday.
Visitors must present some form of photographic identification
at the building entrance. The handicapped accessible entrance is
at E Street. To enter through the handicapped entrance, please call
(202) 208-7814 in advance of your arrival.
